FUTURE-FRIENDLY IZMIR: ONE PLANET LIVING WORKSHOP
The Department of Architecture of Izmir University of Economics organized a workshop on the theme “Future-Friendly Izmir” based on the concept of “One Planet Living” that aims at creating a sustainable future.
The workshop was addressed to students and faculty of the Faculty of Fine Arts & Design, and lasted between 13-16 November 2015. It was preceded by 3 related lectures:
- 11/11: Lecture on “Izmir Coast Design Project” by Aylin Göknur, an architect currently working for Izmir Municipality on IzmirDeniz project.
- 12/11: Lecture on “One Planet Living – a framework for creating better living” by Benjamin Gill, an international expert on environmental issues working for UK-based Bioregional Development Group.
- 13/11: Lecture titled “Small design Big learning: hands-on workshops and courses” by Elias Messinas, an architect based in Israel, involved both in practice and academia, founder of Ecoweek Network for architectural education.
Eighty students from 3rd and 4th year participated in the workshop, mainly from the Department of Architecture plus some from the departments of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design and Industrial Design. The participants worked in 13 teams of 4-8 students during the weekend 14-15/11, and on Monday 16/11 they presented various proposals for local interventions along Izmir seafront inspired by One Planet Living ecological principles.
The event was coordinated by Asst. Prof. Dr. Thanos N. Stasinopoulos, in cooperation with guest experts Dr. Elias Messinas and Benjamin Gill, with support by IEU Prof. Dr. Murat Bengisu and Asst. Prof. Dr. Ceylan Öner.
