IUE architects continue to win awards
Once again, our students in the Department of Architecture were awarded in the Merhaba 2019 Student Graduation Project Contest organized by the Association of Independent Architects of Izmir (İzmir SMD).
Our graduates Seyit Koyuncu, Alp Arda Gönmeden and Sude Argun were deemed worthy of the Exhibition Award in the competition where the graduation projects of newly graduated students from the universities in İzmir competed.
Seyit Koyuncu's project focused on humanity's search for environmentally friendly methods to meet the increasing energy demand due to the oil reserves to be dried out in the near future, and on the transformation of dormant oil extraction platforms into a hypermodern island society in the oceans. The project has made recommendations on social housing opportunities and the formation of land-independent micro-nations.
Alp Arda Gönenmiş has designed a high-rise building in Hong Kong with the concept of biomimicry. Inspired by the spatial relationship of fire ants mounds, he emphasized the interior-exterior relationship by shaping the building mass with channels and public spaces.
Sude Argun aimed to break the perception of internationalism created by skyscrapers and to design dynamic and integrated towers. Thanks to this new and characteristic urban form, the images of the massive skyscrapers have become environmental elements.
In the competition organized last year, IUE Architecture graduates won four awards in total. Our 2018 graduate İrem Kaleci won one of three equivalent project awards and went to the Venice Architecture Biennial. The projects of our other graduates Cansu Servet Nur Tatar, Deniz Taşkın and Onur Polat were deemed worthy to be exhibited by the jury.
