ECOFAB team members won Architectural Digital Design Competition
ECOFAB is a project / design team founded under the leadership of the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design (FFAD), Izmir University of Economics (IUE), dealing with digital fabrication, robotic fabrication, data visualization and many sub-disciplines of architecture. Members of ECOFAB team and 3rd grade students of Department of Architecture, Tunç Çokuysal, Canberk Kaplan and Barış Dondar attended the Shell Design Competition, which was organized in conjunction with XIII. Computational Design Research in Architecture Symposium, and won the first prize.
Shell Design Competition is a digital fabrication based architectural design competition held with the participation of many schools of architecture in Turkey. The theme of this year “Overlaps and Crossings” which is the use of architecture with other disciplines. Participants were asked to produce shell structures by considering architecture with different disciplines. ECOFAB team members Tunç Çokuysal, Canberk Kaplan and Barış Dondar participated in the competition with an entry called the RIB.
Team members explained their entry as follows: “the RIB is a product of a process that reinterprets concepts such as "socialization", "descriptive field” and "diversity" with data analysis and collects data from IUE which analyzes the environmental and psychological data of the students. With the data obtained, the most suitable socialization areas have been designed in a way that they would not be affected by the human density on campus and the areas where students could socialize and rest are created”
EFOFAB team is mentored by IUE FFAD Department of Architecture faculty member Assoc. Dr. Güzden Varinlioğlu and part-time lecturers Onur Dinmez and Metin Şahin.
