3 dimensional ‘art’
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Güzden Varinlioğlu, Faculty Member of Department of Architecture, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) and her team launched the 'Digital Darağaç', Izmir's first virtual modern art museum. There are 10 exhibitions consisting of the works of nearly 70 artists from the Darağaç Collective in the museum, where art lovers can visit with the mobile application that can be downloaded to their smartphones. Drawing attention to the fact that works such as virtual trips and virtual museums have gained momentum with the pandemic, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Varinlioğlu said, “We created a space that reflects the independent spirit of the artists with the virtual museum. You can download the application and visit the museum at home, at your workplace, wherever you want.”
A team of 13 people, who came together under the leadership of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Güzden Varinlioğlu, Faculty Member of Department of Architecture, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), created a virtual museum where they created everything from scratch, including software, design, work selection, artists. The project team started working in collaboration with the Darağaç Collective, a collective located in the Umurbey District of Alsancak established by non-profit artists. As part of the 'Augmented Reality for Alternative Art Spaces' project, an augmented reality design and application was developed for use in streets with uncontrolled light, sound, and human traffic, based on the works of the Darağaç Collective.
70 ARTISTS 10 EXHIBITIONS
Stating that art lovers can download the mobile application called "Digital Darağaç" to their phones and visit the museum wherever they want, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Varinlioğlu said, “Street artists are not people who want to go inside a museum or gallery. We have created a space that reflects their independent spirit. There is no other alternative serving in this field in Izmir. Every stage of the project was carried out with the support of Izmir University of Economics. In this exhibition, which was realized as a result of approximately 6 years of experience, you can see 3D works in 3D.”
PANDEMIC INCREASED THE ATTENTION
Expressing that the interest in virtual tour and virtual museum studies has increased with the pandemic, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Varinlioğlu stated the following: “Many of us have stayed away from social activities. We had days when it was not possible to visit an exhibition with peace of mind. That's why the concept of augmented reality for Alternative Art Spaces gained more importance. It is also possible to experience the pleasure of art in this way.”
A STRONG TEAM WAS ESTABLISHED
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Güzden Varinlioglu undertook the architectural coordination of the project, Asst. Prof. Dr. Kaya Oğuz undertook the computer engineering, and Research Assistant Doruk Türkmen undertook the visual communication design of the project. Other names involved in the project were Furkan Sinan Üğütmen, Nezihe Gökçe Kökcan, Pakize İrem Ercan, Nermin Merve Tokgöz, Gözde Damla Turhan, Kutay Otan, Tuğcan Önbaş, Hakkı Ekmel Ertan, Dünya Kılavuz, and Mehmet Emin Çeşitli.
